Virtual Pilates - How to get the Most out of Your Class

Updated: Feb 15

If I had told you a year ago that in 2020 the world would be experiencing a pandemic and that everything as you knew it would be changing in some capacity, what would you think? That going to your favourite exercise class in person was no longer an option or a choice you were willing to make?! Well, here we are!

I’m not going to lie. When I first decided to teach virtual classes, I thought, this isn’t going to work. I for one had to get used to doing my pre-recorded HIIT classes from home and it took a lot of discipline and scheduling as well as the purchase of some new equipment! Nevertheless, it is something that I’ve learnt to stick with and I really enjoy it.

The positives for me are that I don’t have to travel anywhere, it's flexible as to when I want to workout, and it has helped me to maintain some structure and routine to my day. The negatives, well, being a competitive and social person I do miss the class setting and how it pushes me as well as the opportunity to speak to others!

So, how can you make the most from your Live Virtual Pilates Class?

1. Make sure your instructor is up to date on your current health and physical fitness. Let the instructor know if you have any aches or pains or injuries as they will be able to offer you modifications to your exercises to accommodate this.

2. Choose a class that challenges you but also offers different difficulty levels of exercises to suit your fitness and experience level. Physical therapists have reported an increase in clients with new injuries as a result of starting exercising at home. Without supervision from a trainer/instructor it is important to listen to your body.

3. Focus on the basics! Breathing, posture and correct technique. Now is the time to really work on the basics of Pilates and not feel pressured to keep up or compete with others in a class setting.

4. Ensure a good placement of your screen to follow the class. Try and use as large a screen as you have available and place your mat lengthways and parallel to the screen. Try and reflect your instructors positions on the mat and adjust your camera so that your instructor can see you clearly when you change positions (ie standing to lying on the mat)

so that they can offer feedback as necessary.

I hope these tips help you in your Virtual Pilates Class journey! I’d love to hear your feedback, tips or advice on your experience with virtual classes! Stronger together!
